Overview

Nitrous Oxide is an old, but exceptionally useful sedative agent that is quickly gaining popularity for use in EDs, office-based settings, the OB floor and for outpatient sedation. It offers rapid on and offset that is unmatched by any other sedative, thus decreasing length of stay and increasing throughput and has an excellent safety profile. It is an outstanding sedative for use in pediatric patients and adults for many common procedures from laceration repair to fracture reduction. This course is designed for providers with minimal or no experience with Nitrous Oxide. By the end of the course, participants will have a full understanding of the use nitrous oxide and be able to competently perform sedations with it. This course is checklist-based. Participants will receive checklists for nitrous oxide sedation, will be expected to use them throughout the course and take them back to their home institutions for use. Participants will get experience using real nitrous machines with simulated nitrous oxide on both simulated (live) patients and human patient simulators in the WMU School of Medicine Simulation Center, a 28,000 square foot state-of-the art training facility. This experience can be found nowhere else.

Topics covered will be:
Pediatric pain management
Nitrous oxide use, specific patient populations for use, indications, contraindications
Nitrous oxide effects, side effects and how to deal with them
Set up and use of the nitrous oxide machine
Pre-sedation and sedation checklists for nitrous oxide use
5 different proctored cases on both adult and pediatric patients with both live humans and simulators
-Pediatric forearm fracture
-Adult forearm fracture
-Pediatric laceration repair
-Bartholin’s gland I and D
-Gluteal abscess I and D
