Sherwood B. Winslow Distinguished Lectureship: Effectively Caring for People Diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is common in primary care, can improve markedly with appropriate treatment, and can worsen with poor or un-informed approaches. Thispresentation reviews the etiology, course and outcome, biological and psychological interventions, and practical guidance for optimal care of patients with BPD in the primary care setting.

1. Describe the prevalence, course, and outcome of borderline personality disorder.
2. Integrate two skills that can be used effectively in a busy primary care setting in optimally helping patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.
3. Describe an approach to using medications in BPD that is based on evidence of effectiveness.
