Objectives
  1. Describe the clinical features of acute ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes and how structured clinical assessment tools can be used to identify an large-vessel from a non-large-vessel occlusion stroke.
  2. Describe the clinical indications, contraindications, and critical time intervals for initiation of pharmacologic and device therapies in acute ischemic stroke.
  3. Describe the essential best practices and underlying rationale associated with managing time-critical neurological emergencies of seizures, traumatic brain injuries, and post-cardiac arrest anoxic encephalopathy.
  4. Given a standardized patient simulating clinical features of a stroke or stroke-mimic, demonstrate the ability to use the FAST-VAN stroke screen and determine if large-vessel occlusion is likely or unlikely.
  5. Given a high-fidelity adult or pediatric simulator and working in teams of 4-5, demonstrate through simulated care, the ability to manage patients with acute traumatic brain injury, hemorrhagic stroke with seizure, and pediatric seizures.
