Overview

This introductory course on eating disorders is designed to engage mental and physical health treatment providers in an active learning opportunity during which they will explore the following topics: 

  • Psychological and behavioral characteristics of each eating disorder
  • Medical complications of each eating disorder
  • Epidemiology and Etiology
  • Biopsychosocial Risk Factors for the development of eating disorders
  • Treatment Alternatives
  • Conducting the inital assessment
  • Cognitive Behavioral Treatment
  • Integrative Treatment
  • Patient termination, relapse prevention
  • Community resources, national resources

The course includes a comprehensive notebook with current clinical research, session by session outlines, book chapters and journal articles supporting each session, pre and post-tests, course evaluations. Participants will be expected to complete the reading assignments and come to each session prepared for discussion and active learning.

Dr. Amy Baker Dennis maintains a general practice and specializes in the treatment of eating disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, women's issues and personality disorders. She has been in clinical practice for over 40 years. She is a psychodynamically trained clinical psychologist and is also a certified cognitive therapist. In most cases, she uses and integrative approach to treatment

Dr. Dennis trains and supervises professionals in the treatment of eating disorders, personality disorders and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. She is a researcher, author, and professor and has served on the boards of numerous national and international eating disorder organizations. 

She is a Founding Fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders (FAED), a Founding Fellow and Diplomate of the Academy for Cognitive Therapy, a Founder of the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) and a Founding Member of the Eating Disorder Research Society. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the National Eating Disorder Association, on the Scientific Advisory Board for the Eating Disorder Center of Denver (EDCD) and on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Global Foundation for Eating Disorders (GFED). She has received numerous awards for her accomplishments including "Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Eating Disorders" awarded by the Academy for Eating Disorders, and the "Lifetime Achievement Award" given by the National Eating Disorder Association.

  11. Discuss the process of patient termination
  12. Implement relapse prevention strategies
  13. Analyze community level and national recources for the treatment of eating disorders
